Evans performs a matriarchal grandmother who, in elevating her granddaughter, has uncared for her different love—a barren chalk backyard. Mayhem ensues as Laurel’s conduct frightens away a succession of governesses till an enigmatic one (Kerr) is employed regardless of her mysterious references. She skillfully units about tending to the lady’s reckless feelings and the pitifully failed backyard. John Mills (Hayley’s real-life father) performs the compassionate butler working extra time to take care of order on this unpredictable setting. Fantastically photographed by Arthur Ibbetson (The place Eagles Dare) with a screenplay by the nice John Michael Hayes (Rear Window), tailored from a play by Enid Bagnold (Nationwide Velvet).
